Sitcom Thursday: Everyone's favourite character returns!

Barney Google and Snuffy Smith, 2014-07-07.

Snuffy stands in the middle of a trashed room. Food, clothes, furniture and miscellaneous items are scattered haphazardly about.
"Loweezy's been gone fer days visitin' her sister !!" says Snuffy to no one. "What's she gonna say when she comes home an' sees th' big mess I made ?!"
"I'll tell ya what she's gonna say..." says Loweezy, walking through the door at that very moment. "Good thing I brought our niece Bizzy Buzz Buzz home wif me !!"
"Unca Snuffy !!" says Bizzy.

Oh, Bizzy Buzz Buzz, we all remember her, right? No? You mean you don't recognise a character who appeared three times in 1964 and never again? Well, surely you remember her four appearances in the Snuffy Smith and Barney Google animated series, also in 1964? No? Well, apparently she's back. And her gimmick is that she likes to clean things. So that's why it was a good thing that Loweezy brought her.

Given that she seems to feature every this week, John Rose has now more than doubled the number of strips she appears in. And it's about time. The fans have been clamouring for her return for fifty years now! I wonder if she'll end up appearing more frequently than Barney Google?

Moose and Molly, 2014-07-08.

The phone rings. Moose answers.
"Molly!" It's a survey!" he calls. "Do you still love me?"
"Tell them I'll give it some thought and call them back!" calls Molly from the next room.
Before Moose can react, Molly is in his arms.
"Just kidding, honey!" she says.

I love this running joke of Molly pretending that she doesn't love Moose any more then instantly taking it back. It's bizarre, and Moose falls for it every time. Also, what kind of survey is this?

Herb and Jamaal, 2014-07-09.

Jamaal has been playing basketball.
"Awesome game, Jamaal." says a child. "You play pretty well."
"That was a nice compliment." thinks Jamaal happily. "And I'm glad he didn't ruin it by saying..."
He scowls.
"for your age."

Jamaal just made himself angry about something that someone didn't say or even imply, but hypothetically could have done.

Hi and Lois, 2014-07-10.

Ditto has set up a lemonade stand.
"How's business?" asks Lois.
"Good!" says Ditto. "Mr. Thurston is my best customer."
"I didn't know he liked lemonade."
"He pours something in it from a little bottle he has in his pocket."

It's funny because "Thirsty" Thurston is an alcoholic.

Sitcom Thursday: Eating Disorders and Unnecessary Violence

Wee Pals, 2014-06-10.

Oliver and Randy are standing together when they are approached by Connie and Sybil.
"Where have you been?" asks Oliver.
"At Sybil's house." says Connie. "She has a new beauty kit"
"Didn't she let you use it?" asks Oliver.
Soon Oliver is on the ground and seeing stars. Connie, looking angry, is walking away.
"It was worth it!" says Oliver.

You know what? I liked this one better last time. Still, I do cut the man some slack as he was 90, and it was a good joke. I still laughed the second time.

Side note, how is this comic still going? Turner died at the start of the year and we're not seeing re-runs yet. How far ahead was he working?

Blondie, 2014-06-11.

Dagwood rushes into the house as Blondie holds the door open for him.
"I forgot my briefcase!" he says as he passes.
"What about your lunch, dear?!" asks Blondie.
"That's what's in the briefcase!" calls Dagwood as he runs off.

If it had been some work-related stuff in the case I'd have no trouble believing that Dagwood had forgotten it, but his lunch? Absurd.

Moose & Molly, 2014-06-12.

The Millers are attending a wedding.
"A beautiful marriage ceremony!" says Moose to the woman beside him. "What are we having at the reception?"
"It's been cancelled!" says the woman cheerfully. "They're rushing out of town!"
Moose bursts into tears.
"Moose always cries at weddings" says Molly. But actually Moose is crying because he was looking forward to the reception because he assumed that there would be plenty of free food.

Sitcom Thursday: War and Ennui

Molly is on the phone.
"Mother!" she says. "Moose got a job today! Security guard on an armored truck"

Meanwhile, Moose is at work. While his coworker wasn't looking, Moose has stuffed his clothes full of money to such an extent that it is clearly visible poking out everywhere and is grinning like a loon. Money is loosely piled up inside the truck and spilling onto the ground.
"Moose —" says his colleague, "it happens to everyone the first day! Just put it back"

"When do you think the general will retire?" asks Pvt. Blips.
"Gee, I don't know" says Sheila. "And I'm not sure I could tell if he was retired!"

Gen. Halftrack might take offence to that comment if he'd heard it and actually gave half a shit about his job. But in fact he was practising his putting and not paying attention.

"We have to work tonight" says Crock.
"Whatever" replies a legionnaire indifferently.
"You say 'whatever' one more time and I'll wring your neck!" says Crock. "I'm tired of hearing it!"
"Whatever" says the legionnaire.

It's funny, because Crock will probably actually follow through on his threat and the legionnaire is so numbed by the daily horrors of war that he can no longer muster up even so much as the will to live.

Bad drawings and bad jokes

Marmaduke, 2013-12-04.
Is he talking about the small girl or the dog? Either way, I'm disturbed.

Pooch Café, 2013-12-04.
That has got to be the worst drawing of Oprah ever attempted.

"Out!" yells the bouncer as he hurls Andy from the oub.
"Tch!" exclaims the police officer, wagging a finger. "You know, mister Capp, you should drink in moderation"
"Is that the new club in town?" asks Andy.
You see, he's very drunk and is having comprehension problems. Or perhaps he's making a joke. Either way, the police officer is not amused and expresses his frustration by breaking the fourth wall and grimacing at the audience.

Andy Capp, 2013-12-04.

"Honey!" calls Molly, reading a letter. "How many fish did you say you caught last Saturday?"
"I brought home six beauties!" brags Moose. "Why?"
"Just as I thought!" exclaims Molly. "The fish market made a mistake and is trying to bill us for eight!"
Moose grins at the audience as though to say "Well, she caught me!"

Moose and Molly

"Jack will be able to date our neighbor's daughter if her father approves of him" says Molly.
"Father is anxious to meet you!" says the Millers' neighbour to Molly's Brother Jack.
The Millers' neighbour's father waits in a darkened room, standing next to a lounge chair at which two lamps have been pointed, making it the only well-lit spot in the room.

I'm confused. Why does Molly's Brother Jack need the approval of his girlfriend's grandfather?

Moose and Molly

Molly's Brother Jack and Moose are playing horseshoes in the yard. Chester watches them from inside his house. He's a little worried because Moose and Jack have set up the stake at the end of the yard nearest his house and are therefore throwing the horseshoes toward it, and that side of the house has a large window, which might be broken if either of the players throws a horseshoe a little too vigorously.

Moose and Molly

"My Brother Jack was awake all night thinking of the new job that he starts today!" says Molly.
Moose looks concerned.

Meanwhile, at Molly's Brother Jack's new job, he has fallen asleep at his desk. His employer, B.R. Buxton, displays an impressive degree of control as he squirts water from the bubble tap right across the room at him.

Moose and Molly

"Every company in town refuses to hire me," says Molly's Brother Jack, "and my former girlfriend won't return the engagement ring"
"Jack," says Moose, "forget those problems! Go fishing!"

Molly's Brother Jack takes Moose's advice and heads out to the river with his dog. He even manages to catch a pretty impressive fish, Unfortunately a bear also spots the fish and grabs it. This proves to be a problem for Molly's Brother Jack as his fishing rod is still attached to the fish by the hook with which he caught it and there appears to be no way to get the bear to drop the fish or to unhook it.

Oh well, I'm sure he'll be fine.

Moose and Molly

Molly is telling Moose about a conversation she had earlier.
"Jack, I said---" says Molly, "forget baseball and go find a job!"

Meanwhile, Molly's Brother Jack has a job interview.
"Jack, is something bothering you?" asks the interviewer. "You spend a lot of time staring out of the window"
Somehow, Molly's Brother Jack has managed to rig a television up on the ledge outside the window without the interviewer noticing, so that he can still watch the baseball. This is especially impressive as the interview is taking place on one of the higher floors of  a very large building and the television is actually plugged in inside the room.

Moose and Molly

Moose is painting a chair. He see Molly passing the doorway and calls out to her "Molly, bring me a rag".
Molly returns a moment later after changing into a purple dress and silently offers Moose the pink polka-dotted dress she normally wears. Moose doesn't seem to know how to take that.

Moose and Molly

Moose awakes in the night, thinking he hears a burglar moving about the house, so he wakes Molly, who takes a baseball bat and apprehends the miscreant while her husband hides in the closet. It's funny because traditional gender roles would have had Moose deal with the intruder while Molly hid, but in this case it was reversed.

Moose and Molly

A pizza delivery man brings a pizza to the Millers' house. Moose pays him for it and calls out "Molly! The pizza you ordered is here!"
"I didn't order a pizza !" says Molly. "Yoo-hoo! Pizza man!"
"Molly, let's not be too hasty" says Moose, holding the pizza box to his chest and licking its edges in a weird and creepy manner. Also, liquid is coming out of the pizza box.

Moose and Molly's roof is leaking quite badly.
"What should I do?" asks Moose.
"It's easy —" says Molly, holding a copy of Home Repair. "Just use this book"
Rather than using the instructions found in the book though, Moose simply nails the book over the hole in the roof.
"It isn't leaking now" says Molly.

"That's okay!" says Molly.

Unbeknownst to Moose, Molly has already arranged for Her Brother Jack  to sleep in the bath, however he will have to get up at 6:30am as Martha likes to shower early.

"Babe, put this note on the front door!" says Molly, holding up a big yellow sign. "I'm expecting my brother to arrive soon"

Unfortunately, Molly's Brother Jack has already arrived and is now in a precarious situation vis-à-vis a recently painted floor.

"Jack is going to be late for his job interview" says Molly to her mother.
Molly's mother takes one of the pancakes from the stack she's carrying and brings it with her into Molly's Brother Jack's bedroom, where he's still asleep.
"Wake up, Jack!" she yells, slapping him with the pancake. "Pancakes for breakfast"

The Crabtrees are in bed.
"I'll put a stop to Moose Miller's cat!" says Chester.
Clara seems worried.
"Meow" says the cat.

"Whack!" yells someone.
"I got him with my shoe! Ha ha ha" says Chester. "Now we can get some sleep"
What he doesn't notice though is that Moose Miller's cat (actually a human-sized bipedal monster) has entered the room behind him and is preparing to take its revenge. Clara has noticed, but is frozen in fear and can give her husband no warning.

"Mort says he saw a flying saucer!" says Moose.
"Do you believe in that silly nonsense?" asks Chester.
A cat hides in a bucket, ready to leap out and kill a passing mouse.
"Yes!" says Moose, staring wide-eyed over Chester's shoulder.
Chester turns around and is shocked to see an alien in a little flying saucer harpooning a sausage from his barbecue.
