Philosophical Friday: Bring Back DailyINK!

King Features Syndicate publishes their comics online through the website Comics Kingdom. It's one of the two places I read the comics I talk about here (the other being Universal Uclick's GoComics). But before Comics Kingdom, King Features had a site called DailyINK, and it was about a billion times better.

I should point out, when they changed the site they added a bunch of stuff that I really like. They started putting up higher resolution images and expanded the archives so you can see older strips, and they added a bunch of vintage strips, which is nice. So it's not all bad.

But the biggest change for me, on a day-to-day basis, is that everything now takes much longer to load. The way Comics Kingdom works is that all your subscribed comics appear on a single page. And even though it won't display them at full size until you click them, it loads the full-size images anyway. I read a lot of comics, so I basically have to start the page loading and then go and do something else for a while to give it time to load.

That would be an inconvenience, but not a major one. What really annoys me is the fact that even a single strip now takes around 15 seconds to load. It may not sound like much, but it feels like a while when you're just sitting there waiting for it, and if you're trying to read through archived strips then it really adds up.

This ends up meaning that even though you've paid for access to their archives, browsing them is such a hassle that I doubt many people make much use of it. By comparison, the archives on DailyINK didn't go back as far, but strips loaded almost instantly, so you could easily read through old comics.

The other change that makes the archives less useful is the fact that the images are now accessed in a different way. It used to be that you could enter the image URL to go directly to it, and they were named in a straight-forward manner. If today's Spider-Man strip was tas20140530.gif then you knew that yesterday's would be tas20140529.gif, so you could actually write your own scripts to grab a whole lot of comics all at once to read offline. The actual URL I get for today's Spider-Man strip now is http://safr.kingfeatures.com/idn/ck3/content.php?file=aHR0cDovL3NhZnIua2luZ2ZlYXR1cmVzLmNvbS9UaGVBbWF6aW5nU3BpZGVybWFuLzIwMTQvMDUvU3BpZGVybWFuLjIwMTQwNTMwXzE0NDAuZ2lm which is obviously not supposed to mean anything to a human reading it and gives no hint of what the previous one would be. I don't even know if that URL would work for anyone else or if it's unique to me.

I've contacted King Features about this issue, and here's what they told me:
We've had a few complaints about speed compared with the previous site, but there's definitely a lot more going on. For example, the new site is responsive and is built with mobile devices in mind. That comes at a price.
Thanks for the feedback.
So it doesn't look like they intend to do anything about this at all. Apparently whatever back-end improvements they feel they've made to the site are worth the fact that the whole thing is worse than the previous version from the perspective of people trying to use it. Still, if you have a Comics Kingdom subscription then I encourage you to complain about the site, because if enough people do then maybe they might eventually feel it worthwhile to do something.

Weekend Workshop: Did you know I have a Twitter?

Based on the Apartment 3-G strips of 2014-05-01 and 2014-05-02.

And since I only did the one edit this week I thought I'd pad this post out with some stuff I already posted on Twitter during the week. If you enjoy these tweets then you can follow me on Twitter and see even more of them.

Weekend Workshop: Merciful Margo

Based on Jane's World 2014-03-10.
I just saw the direction Chelle was looking in panel two and the new dialogue wrote itself.

Based on Apartment 3-G 2014-03-10.

Based on Apartment 3-G 2014-03-14.
Come on, we all know Margo doesn't do "compassion" or "empathy" or "inconveniencing herself in any way to cater to the needs of others".

Also, this week I'd like to link some stuff that I forgot to include last week, specifically Myrl Crow who posts amusing captions to comics panels, Wonderella, a drunken super hero, J Jonah Jameson, Spider-Man's Peter Parker's boss, and the Comic Strip Megathread on the Something Awful forums, a great place to talk about syndicated comics.

And when I posted this I forgot one again so I'm editing it in. I meant to tell you that Stripped, a documentary about comics, will be available soon and looks like it's going to be pretty good.

One-Panel We-Thursday? Breaking the law

I had an issue with my hard disk the other day, so I'm posting this a day late.

Marmaduke grabs Phil by the arm and drags him into the yard to see that the snowman that was there is now little more than a misshapen blob.
"There's nothing I can do, Marmaduke." says Phil. "It's called 'end of winter.'"
It isn't though, no one says "Ah, the weather's warming up, I'm so glad it's 'end of winter'!" That's just not what anyone calls it.

Mrs Nutmeg and Iggy wait while Heathcliff meets with his parole officer.
"That's his fake laugh." says Iggy.
It seems that Heathcliff is trying to get on his parole officer's side as he does not want to return to cat jail.

"Mommy, when I graduate from college, will I be smarter than your phone?" asks Dolly.
No, Dolly, you won't.

Weekend Workshop: Unsanitary Restaurants

Based on Tina's Groove 2014-03-04.
Based on Blondie 2014-03-05.
And here's an avatar I made from this week's classic Mandrake Sunday (originally published 1941-11-23):

And a reminder that I also have a Facebook page, where you can see the modified comics for each Weekend Workshop as I make them instead of waiting for Sunday plus get notifications when I update this blog, and a Twitter which includes all that plus additional (funny?) comments about a bunch of comics each day.

And in case you're not already aware of them, Comics Kingdom and GoComics are the best places to read the daily comics online, and you may also enjoy The Comics Curmudgeon, The Lovely Ladies of Apartment 3-G, Mary Worth & Me,  Son of Stuck Funky and Luann DeGroot on Twitter.

Big news!

I haven't posted anything here in a couple of months now, and part of that was being busy, but also being lazy. But starting next week, all that changes. By which I mean that I'm going to start posting again.

There will be a couple of changes though. The content will be the same sort of stuff I've always posted, but I'm going to make some changes to my schedule. Specifically, each day of the week will get a particular focus (and a catchy name). Here's how it's going to work.

Weekend Workshop - Edited comics previously tagged as "Improving the Comics".
Melodrama Monday - Soap-opera strips. Mary Worth, Apartment 3-G, Rex Morgan MD, etc.
Action Tuesday - Action strips. Spider-Man, Dick Tracy, The Phantom, etc.
One-Panel Wednesday - One panel comics. Heathcliff, F-Minus, Dennis the Menace, etc.
That's the Joke Thursday - Sit-com strips. Sally Forth, Shoe, Garfield, etc.
Philosophical Friday - The sort of content previously tagged as "Ponderation". That was a really dumb name, and this one only is a slight improvement. Oh well, can't win them all.

The first post on this new schedule will be a Weekend Workshop on Sunday consisting of a few I've done over the last couple of months.

I'm still here

Hey, so... guess who's been really lazy and not bothered posting anything for ages? Oh, it was me. Sorry.

Miss who?

I spent about 25 minutes today setting right a grievous wrong and making the world a better place by helping to improve the veracity of our greatest store of factual information. By which I mean that I verified that Miss Buxley's name is actually Sheila and added a citation to the Wikipedia page.

Some ne'er-do-well had gone and changed the page to indicate that her given name is "Bux", which is plainly absurd. I knew the truth, but I couldn't just go changing it back without proof. That would just lead to an endless war over the Wikipedia page and possibly the universe. But it's surprisingly hard to track down anyone who actually knows (or cares) what her name is.

Google led me first to a couple of pages that mentioned it, but which had probably gotten the information straight from Wikipedia and certainly didn't bother to give any evidence to verify the claim, but then I stumbled upon the DailyINK trivia competition on Facebook. Earlier this year they confirmed it.

To be honest, they probably got their information from Wikipedia too, but since they're somewhat official their word is law and now her name is definitively Sheila, and no one can say it isn't.

One Year

Well, look at that. I've actually been doing this for a whole year now (to the minute). What a massive waste of time. Oh well, I've built up momentum now, I couldn't possibly stop. Besides, I'd look like an idiot if I gave up now, like as though I'd been wrong to start in first place. No, best to carry on and pretend it's all been worthwhile.

Hooray, one whole year!

New colours and shit

I was getting really annoyed with how small I had to make my edited comics to get them to fit within the column as I had it before, so I thought I'd do something about that, and while I was at it I messed with a few other things.

Let me know if you like it or if you hate it or if you're indifferent to it or, more importantly, if anything seems to be bent, broken or otherwise fucked up. Especially if these changes mean that stuff isn't fitting on your tiny antiquated monitor any more, because I do actually want the site to be readable.

The new colours and fonts are supposed to be a bit more "comicky" (Comicish? Comic-y? Comicy?) or whatever, but I might decide I hate them and put them back. I don't know, I just changed a bunch of stuff for the hell of it. Let me know what you think.

Twitter!

Have you ever found yourself thinking "I really like comics, but I just don't have the time for them!"? If so, this is the solution you've been waiting for! Comics for the Blind has come to Twitter!

You can now get the comics you love in 140 characters or less, from the convenience of your own computer/phone/other!

Just add @blindcomics to your Twitter and you'll receive up to the minute updates (whenever I happen to make them) so you can enjoy your comics the convenient way!

Broken computer

My hard disk died and I had to get a new one and set my computer up from scratch, so I missed a few days posts, but I should be back on schedule now.

2012-06-05

Apologies

I've been sick, so I haven't posted anything the last few days. The comic improvements I had already queued up to post went ahead, so there's been that, but the absence of comics for the blind is not me slowing down my posting schedule or anything, I just haven't had the will to do anything other than sit at my computer watching YouTube for the last few days.

But I'm feeling better now, so it should be back to normal. :-)

Poll

I've had a couple of people tell me that they like particular posts more than others, for different reasons, so I've created a poll to see what sort of comics you would like me to focus on.

I'm not including the Improving the Comics posts, because those I create on a whim, as inspiration strikes, and I'll continue to do that regardless of what anyone thinks, but for the Comics for the Blind posts I'm happy to accommodate you since I find entertainment in them regardless of which types of comics they are.

And no matter what the result, I'll continue to post a variety of different comics, but if something comes out as being preferred I'll try to skew it in that direction.

Questions, comments and suggestions can be posted as comments here or emailed directly to me.
